Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty (Piezo Surgery): Precise Shaping and Rapid Recovery
A revolutionary development in nasal aesthetics, Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty has left traditional breaking and cutting methods behind, ushering in an era of bone shaping with the power of sound waves. This advanced technology, also known as Piezo surgery, focuses solely on bone tissue, avoiding damage to surrounding tissues and making the recovery process much more comfortable for patients.
As Op. Dr. Ergün Kürün, we will examine in detail the scientific basis, advantages, and perfection in aesthetic results of this method applied in our clinic in Adana.

What is Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?
PIEZO NOSE AESTHETICS
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a technology that uses ultrasonic sound waves, vibrating 25,000 to 30,000 times per second, to shape bones with millimeter precision. This method has replaced traumatic tools like hammers and chisels used in traditional surgery.
Precision Through Sound Waves
The Piezo device is designed to affect only mineralized hard tissues (bone). This allows the surgeon to work with precision, as if drawing on bone with a pencil.
Selective Effect: It stops when it comes into contact with soft tissues (vessels, nerves, mucosa) and does not cause damage.
Smooth Contours: Provides smooth and planned shaping of bones instead of uncontrolled fractures.
Advantages of Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty: Why Choose It?
The greatest expectation of the modern patient is to return to social life as quickly as possible with minimal deformation. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty directly meets this expectation.
Minimum Bruising and Swelling
The primary reason for bruising in traditional methods is damage to surrounding capillaries when the bone is broken. Since Piezo surgery protects soft tissue, the rate of post-operative bruising and swelling is minimal.
Controlled Shaping and Natural Results
Uncontrolled bone fractures can sometimes lead to irregularities or depressions on the nasal dorsum. With the ultrasonic method, bones are filed and cut, which allows for the creation of a smooth nasal dorsum that is perfectly aligned with facial features.
Comfort During the Recovery Process
Post-operative pain is significantly reduced.
The return to social life is reduced to 7 days.
The healing stability of the nasal bone is higher.
Technology and Technique: How is Piezo Applied?
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a versatile technology that can be used in both open and closed surgical techniques.
New Standard in Bone Shaping
Piezo tips come into play during the removal of the nasal hump or the narrowing of wide nasal bones. These diamond-tipped instruments offer the surgeon infinite control by pulverizing or cutting the bone in a fine line.
Compatibility with Preservation and Structural Techniques
Ultrasonic surgery complements the Preservation and Structural techniques we discussed earlier. It is the safest way to narrow the bone base while preserving the nasal roof or to place structural supports.
Who is Suitable for Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?
This technology is suitable for almost any case requiring bone intervention, but it is particularly recommended in certain situations.
Humped and Wide Nasal Structures
For patients with wide nasal bones or a prominent hump, Piezo is the most effective solution for thinning and narrowing the bone.
Revision (Secondary) Surgeries
It provides a safe intervention option without damaging surrounding tissues in patients who have undergone previous operations and whose bone structure has become delicate.
Post-Operative Process and Expectations
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is an advanced surgical tool, not a “magic wand”; therefore, healing rules still apply, but the process is much more comfortable.
First Week and Beyond
First 3 Days: Mild swelling may be observed, but it is much more limited compared to the traditional method.
Day 7: The protective thermal plastic splint on the nose is removed. Patients can usually return to work at this stage.
Long-Term Result: Since the bones heal more smoothly, the risk of unwanted bone protrusions (callus formation) on the nasal dorsum in the long term is low.

Frequently Asked
Questions
ULTRASONIC RHINOPLASTY
1. Are bones truly not broken in ultrasonic rhinoplasty?
No, the traditional breaking process with a hammer and chisel is not used in this method. Instead, bones are cut or filed with millimeter precision using sound waves. This is a much gentler process for the tissue.
2. Does Piezo surgery extend the operation time?
Ultrasonic shaping may extend the operation time by approximately 30-45 minutes compared to the traditional method, as it requires more attention and meticulousness. However, the comfort of recovery and precision it provides are definitely worth this time.
3. Can Piezo be used in every nose surgery?
Piezo is not necessary if only the cartilage at the nasal tip is to be intervened (Tip Plasty). However, it can and is recommended for every case where the bone hump is to be removed or the nose is to be narrowed, i.e., whenever bone is touched.
4. Is there no bruising after the surgery?
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty reduces the risk of bruising by 80-90%. However, very slight yellowing or swelling may be observed depending on the patient’s skin structure, sensitivity, and bleeding tendency; this resolves much faster compared to traditional methods.
5. Are ultrasonic rhinoplasty prices different from other methods?
Due to the cost of the advanced technology devices and surgical consumables used, there may be a slight price difference compared to traditional methods. However, considering the speed of the recovery process and the quality of the result, it is the most requested method by our patients.
